‘Best Friends have a Great Adventure’

by Michael Hartland (Director)

This story was written by Sukitha, who at nine years old is currently our youngest student. Over a period of a couple of months we have been working on developing her writing. I encouraged her to be ambitious and write a story using different chapters. I never imagined that she would end up being inspired to write twenty-two chapters!

You can enjoy her story by reading on…

Chapter 1

On a sweltering , bright day in Africa a young girl named Angela was washing her clothes when in all of a sudden she felt extremely thirsty. It was a very dry land with tonnes of sand piles.

She ran to a pump but there was no water inside so she decided to walk to the river.  It was a very long way to the river but she needed to get water desperately so she carried on her long journey.  It was so hot that she nearly passed out.

The more she walked the more she felt stressed. Her mind was racing and she thought “I must get some water or I might faint.”

A young girl saw her struggling so she ran up to Angela and helped her.

Chapter 2

” Hello ” said the little girl cheerfully.

“Umm, hi  ,” replied Angela.

” Why do you look so stressed? ”

“Well I need some water but it is a very long way to the river,” mumbled Angela.

Do you know that I know a shorter way to the river?” whispered the girl.

“Why are you whispering ?” questioned Angela.

” Because no one knows this secret so I don’t want anyone to hear them,” replied  the girl.

So off they went striding through the brown and yellow grass which was only up to their feet because there had been no rain for weeks.

” By the way I am Anna ,”announced the little girl finally revealing her name.

After a little while, they arrived at the river.

During the journey with Anna, Angela felt a bit happy because she had someone to help her on her way to the river and back home.

Chapter 3

When they went forward they only saw a sandy, cracked road.

In despair, they walked a few steps back from the road and gazed at each other.

“ What do we now ?’’ questioned Anna.

“ Don’t know ,’’ replied Angela sadly.

A tear rolled down her cheek as she gazed down at the road with sorrow.

“ Oh , you don’t need to cry, I know another river in the next town but unfortunately there are no shortcuts this time,’’ assured Anna.

Slowly, Angela wiped her tears from her top and asked “ Do you actually know a way to another river?’’

“ YES I DO,’’ exclaimed Anna.

Ok then let’s goooooo!’’ shouted Angela in excitement.

Chapter 4

The walk was very tiring and as soon as Angela gazed up she saw colossal mountains towering over them.

“Wait Anna, I know where we can get water!’’ shrieked Angela, her heart was pounding with excitement.

“ From where Angela?’’ Anna replied.

“ At school we learnt that the start of a river is in the mountains and look, we are right in front of some!’’

“ Great thinking Angela,’’ replied Anna patting Angela’s back gently.

Chapter 5

“Angela,’’ said Anna.

“Yes Anna,’’ replied Angela.

“I might be a bit slow because I’m very tired and I haven’t experienced climbing, so is that ok?’’ Anna announced.

“ No problem at all Anna but I have a job for you,’’ Angela said.

“ What is it?’’ asked Anna eagerly.

“ You know you said that you may be a bit slow climbing the mountain?’’

“Ye-s-s.’’

“I thought you can look out for any passer-bys and if anyone does ask them politely if they can help us.’’

“Yes Angela,’’ replied Anna feeling a bit sad to be left out and a bit happy that she could do something to help Angela.

“ Don’t forget to ask help from someone who brought a car not walking because we have already done walking for hours!’’exclaimed Angela.

Chapter 6

So Angela started her hike up the mountain. It was very high up to the top of the mountain but she remembered she did not need to go to the summit of the mountain only around a few feet below it.

“ Safe journey, Angela, be safe!’’ bellowed Anna.

“ Yes Anna, I will,’’ Angela bellowed back.

So off went Angela huffing and puffing already !

Anna watched her go until Angela was the size of a dot.

Angela felt scared without Anna because she had helped her during the whole journey but she understood that Anna had never experienced climbing a mountain and she was afraid of heights.

“Grrrrrrrr!’’

Angela shuddered.

“Where did that growl come from?’’ thought Angela.

Then all of a sudden a wolf appeared out of nowhere.

“AAAhhhhhhhhh!!’’ screamed Angela frightened.

Quickly, she ran behind a massive boulder. The wolf looked around feeling puzzled, trying to find Angela. Eventually it gave up and scurried back to its cave.

When the coast was clear she ran back to the route she was following and carried on her search for water.

Chapter 7

Angela continued her dangerous hike for water.

Then suddenly, a huge, thick tree collapsed right in her way.

“At least it didn’t fall on me,’’ thought Angela but the problem was that it was impossible to go over it and if she went around she would be stung by some bees which were buzzing loudly so she decided to use a different path instead.

The other path was also dangerous because there were lots of poisonous ants which could bite her.

Luckily, Angela brought some poisonous biting cream so if she did get stung she would put the cream on where the ants had bit her.

Angela decided to jump over the ants to get to the other side safely.

Unfortunately, Angela got bitten so she sat down on the grass  and rubbed some cream on her heel which is where the ant had bitten her.

Chapter 8

Meanwhile Anna was waiting alone feeling worried about Angela because she had gone off on her adventure for nearly five hours without her.

Suddenly, Anna saw a car driving past her.

“Excuse me,’’ shouted Anna with all her might but unfortunately the driver was paying attention to the radio so he couldn’t hear her.

“Aahhhhh,’’ sighed Anna to herself.

Anna decided to go up a little bit further so she could see a better view.

Then, another car turned round the corner.

Anna was just about to shout help to the driver but he turned around another corner into the motorway and was gone.

With her mind racing about Angela, Anna couldn’t think of anything except going up and facing her fears to help Angela so that is what she did.

Anna packed her bag with a pillow she brought and some apples from a nearby apple tree and set off.

Chapter 9

On the way to find Angela, Anna found a large orange tree near the grass.

“Oh these oranges smell amazing,’’ said Anna, smiling to herself.

She took a bite and carried on her journey.

A few moments later she found the poisonous ants scurrying around like mad.

Anna took a large jump over the ants onto the other side.

One hour later, Anna found a great, peaceful resting area that she could rest on before carrying on her difficult hike.

When Anna reached a sign saying “ 150 feet below summit’’ she looked up and saw Angela standing there.

Her heartbeat quickened as she raced up another 100 feet then stopped.

Chapter 10

Anna kept on climbing and then a wolf appeared out of nowhere.

“AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!’’ screamed Anna loudly as she ran back down the mountain.

The wolf chased her and chased her until she was 900 feet away from the summit.

Anna quickly ran to the massive boulder and panted loudly.

As soon as the coast was clear she ran back up feeling extremely frightened.

Chapter 11

Meanwhile Angela was still climbing up to the summit.

Suddenly, she heard a joyful bark and a dog and a young man walked up to her.

“Hello there young lady what makes you climb up here today?’’ questioned the man politely.

“Oh, I have just come for some water to drink, that’s all,’’ replied Angela.

“Water?’’ asked the man.

“Yes sir, at the summit.’’

“Ah I see me and my dog have been up there loads of times, would you like us to show you the way?’’ asked the man.

“Oh yes please!’’ squealed Angela in delight.

“Follow my dog,  you see my back is getting very weak so I won’t be able to help you but do shout to me if you need me,’’ said the man

“Will do,’’ announced Angela.

As she set off with the dog.

Chapter 12

While Angela was climbing Anna decided to eat something because she was very hungry.

She found a few oranges inside her bag and took one to eat.

Then a terrific bang rose in the air and a massive rock crashed on her.

Anna fell to the ground and wounded her hand.

She grabbed one of the healing oranges which cures any injuries and took a bite.

Anna immediately felt better then ran back up the mountain

Chapter 13

Angela was still following the dog .

Just then  Angela fell face flat on the floor after falling over a stick.

The dog ran back to her master.

The master gave him a healing orange and then the dog ran back to Angela.

Angela took a bite and instantly got up and ran up and followed the dog.

Chapter 14

Down below, Anna was watching Angela from the middle of the mountain using her binoculars although she was still a dot.

“Hhmph,’’ muttered Anna,”These binoculars are broken,’’ as she slammed them on the floor which made them even worse.

Anna looked up again but this time she could see another massive rock rolling towards her.

“Oh dear,’’ muttered Anna but then it was too late. Anna was squashed.

Luckily, Anna fell into a pile of mowed, lush grass at the centre of the roundabout.

Everyone burst into laughter and honked their horns so much that Anna thought that it would break.

Anna blushed but no matter how nervous she was she would save Angela.

Chapter 15

Although Anna was all the way at the bottom, Angela had reached up to the top with the dog.

She waved at everyone as people looked up and shouted “Look at that little girl!’’

When the group was settled down and minding their own business again, Angela could hear the nice lapping water at the other side.

“Trickle trickle.’’

The dog barked loudly at Angela.

“Ok ok doggy, let’s go back down,’’ said Angela.

But instead of taking Angela down to the master the dog led Angela to a nice, little hut.

Chapter 16

Anna was very bored of climbing the same mountain so she hiked up another one.

When Anna was at the summit of the other mountain, she saw Angela right next to the little hut.

“Little girl, what are you doing here?’’ asked a lady with a cute cat.

“Oh I’m trying to save my friend,’’ replied Anna pointing at Angela on the other side.

The lady thought.

“I have an idea,’’cried the lady.

“What is it?’’

“I will give you a rope and then you will jump to your friend,’’ announced the lady.

“Sure,’’ said Anna.

The lady reached out for the rope and pulled it.

“Squeak.’’

“Alright then, let’s go,’’ announced the lady.

And off went Anna as she flew in the air but something went wrong…

Anna was too heavy so the rope pulled her down and Anna fell asleep because she landed straight on top of a mountain.

After that, Anna was totally dazed.

Chapter 17

Anna was helpless as she tried to call the lady for help but unfortunately the lady was confused where Anna had gone so she was just wandering here and there without looking down below.

After making thousands of huffing noises Anna finally got the lady’s attention.

“Oh darling!’’ screeched the lady looking at her with sadness.

And in a blink of an eye the lady was there standing right in front of Anna.

Quickly and carefully, the lady pulled Anna up gently and then offered her to go to her house and immediately Anna accepted the offer.

So the lady carried Anna all the way to her house.

Chapter 18

Soon after, Anna recovered at the lady’s house and she became stronger and stronger.

Then the lady asked, “ Why are you here sweetheart?’’

“Well,I can’t really remember why I’m here but I do have a reason,’’ replied Anna.

Anna was very tired and her eyes drooped so the lady carried her to a spare bed and told her to rest for a few minutes.

Chapter 19

They went back to the mountains since the lady thought it might help Anna remember but it didn’t work.

Suddenly, she got an idea.

She took out two phones and gave one to Anna.

“Errrr, what am I going to do with this?’’ asked Anna.

“Just call me when you need help,’’ replied the lady as she rushed off because she needed to help another person waiting down below.

Chapter 20

Anna had no rush so she just waited for the lady to finish her conversation.

When the lady had completed the talk she ran back to Anna and asked her why she was still there.

Anna questioned the lady, “Can you please help me to get up to the summit?’’

“Of course,’’replied the lady.

So off they went.

When the pair reached the ants the lady lifted Anna to the other side.

After another wolf came and the lady frightened it away.

After all that work they finally reached the summit.

Chapter 21

Anna saw Angela scurrying around the hut but when she saw Anna she gave an excited squeal and hugged her so tightly that Anna could barely breathe.

“Thank you so much!’’ screamed Anna to the lady.

“It was my pleasure darling,’’ replied the lady beaming ear to ear.

Soon after everyone climbed down.

Chapter 22

Once Anna and Angela arrived at the bottom they took the curve and found themselves next to a large forest, where there was nothing but a river.

“Water,’’ screamed Angela as she hurried over to the river and cupped her hands.

She took a huge gulp of water and another one followed after.

Then, she ran over to Anna and gave her a great big hug and said “ Thank you, let’s go back home now,’’

So off they went.

They went by taxi because they couldn’t find a car which was driving to a place near their houses.

“Vroooom.’’

Soon after they arrived.

Surprisingly, Anna’s house was moved nearer to Angela’s house because her parents liked Angela’s parents.

Anna and Angela told their parents the story.

Since that day and onwards Anna and Angela met each other very often.

So their friendship lasted forever.

The End!!!
