Every year, over 750,000 students apply for UK universities. But how do we help learners build a successful foundation on which to base their UCAS application?
I have been preparing students for the best UK universities for thirty years, and my approach is based on three distinctive aspects.
1. Listen and understand
First of all, I set out to discover what the student is really interested in. This is of fundamental importance as it can lead to a rethink about their desired course. Recently I was working with someone who thought they were interested in Engineering but discovered they were even more fascinated by Material Science. And someone who started working with me interested in Physics and Philosophy has now changed to Philosophy and Theology as their degree of preference.
2. Independent research
This second phase is where the student takes a leap forwards in their depth of knowledge and understanding. Only they can do it – no one can do it for them! I know how to challenge bright students with the right questions to get them thinking at deeper levels, hungry to find out more. Some intriguing topics that students have researched at depth for their sessions with me this year have included Game Theory, Law and AI, and Time.
3. Challenging discussion
Finally, students benefit by being interrogated about their research. This mirrors the approach that is taken in interviews and university discussions. Many young people are just not used to talking about their intellectual interests. They need genuine interest, warm enthusiasm, and the confidence to develop their thinking independently.
