Would you go on a journey with a hobbit?

Stores are about life, I tell my students.

J.R.R.Tolkein’s classic tale The Hobbit may appear on the surface to be about a little man with hairy feet, and a wizard. But really it’s about the summons we all encounter at one stage or another to grow up, to leave home and set out on our own adventure. An adventure that involves some risk, even some danger, but plenty of reward.

Our ebook But I’m no good at creative writing helps students write their own narratives – something many find difficult because they are not given a helpful structure to use. As an English tutor I use this material with students because I know from 30+ years’ experience that it works.

At the centre of this ebook is the idea of ‘the black hole’. Stories, like lives, go through cycles of challenge and difficulty, where we must draw on help from others and our own inner resources.

I’ve just started using The Hobbit with a new student, and it reminded me how we can all feel like hobbits sometimes – small, inconsequential and fearful. And that we can all grow on the journey to being wise – perhaps the origin of the word “wizard”?

But I’m no good at creative writing is an affordable guide to get everyone writing and is available on Amazon.
